Mary
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
I finally know why Jesus put the story about Mary and Martha in the Bible (caveat: I’m sure there are many reasons, but here is one for me)
The Martha’s in this world get things done
Heck, Martha gets a bad rap in that story
The way we normally interpret her…
As a “striver”
She’s actually a power player
She sets the table for the fun
She attends her Lord
She honors Him with her hands
She is who we praise in this life
Most often
We have come to exonerate Mary, as our Lord does…but why did He honor her,
Sitting idly at His feet?
Yes, His point hits hard
& it hits home
What she was doing wasn’t a waste
Her sitting
Her watching
Her marveling
Her worshipping
Her refusal of
Striving—
Wasn’t frivolous,
Lazy,
Boring,
Or ignorant
It wasn’t “unproductive”
“For Mary has chosen what is better,
And it will not be taken away from her”
In DC
Mary is a type B
The type A’s get praised
All the day long—
The type B’s,
Well they’re sitting in their rooms
Contemplating life’s existence
Much of the time,
There aren’t even tangible
Outcomes
For Mary’s gift
In the practical way
We think of outcomes,
Usually
There aren’t trophies for Type B’s
Which is why Jesus gave us one
In Mary
Be brave enough to go slow—
Be brave enough to be a type B
In a type A word
I don’t think Jesus is trying to make the
Martha’s into Mary’s
I think He’s protecting Mary,
Saying the way she is made
Is also beautiful
& good
I believe
He’s saying,
Don’t let your joy be stollen
Trying to be like everyone else.
Meet with the Lord
In the center of who you are.
Let Him glorify Himself
In and through the authentic way
He made you
If He made you to serve quickly—
Serve
If He made you to sit and think—
Do that
(And maybe stretch the legs once in a while)
If He made you to encourage,
Do that
Serve
Encourage
Lead
Give
Prophesy
Be merciful
Teach
In all these things, love Him
And let His love flow through
Who you
Truly
Are
Luke 10:38-41
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
